‘Experimental’ – A Projection Mapping Engagement Opportunity

This inspirational learning opportunity has been created through a partnership between Light Up Poole and Bournemouth University (BU). The project will take place during January 2019 at Blandford, Poole High, Lytchett Minster, Montacute School and Bournemouth and Poole College.
In workshops led by industry professionals, students will explore a technique called Projection Mapping, which involves overlaying video on to objects using specific software techniques. They will also explore the use of multimedia software, modular programming concepts, video production, computer hardware, media production processes and project planning. This will enhance the students’ current studies in related areas for GCSE, BTEC and A Level Art and Design qualifications. Students from Montecute School will be tasked with creating the sculptures for the projections to be played onto.
With curriculum follow-up and development, the students’ work will be presented throughout the three-night festival from 21^st to 23^rd February.
Leading the project is Liam Birtles, an artist, educator and researcher with over 20 years experience in creative practice with digital technologies. As a key member of the internationally renowned artists collective ‘Squidsoup’ his work is regularly shown at festivals, galleries and events around the globe.  He is currently Programme Leader for the BA Digital Media Design at Bournemouth University (BU). BU is recognised worldwide as a leading university for inspiring learning, advancing knowledge and enriching society through the fusion of education, research and practice.
